About This Website
My name is J B Myers and I would like to welcome you to my website. As you read the material on this website, it is important that you know some things about me as well what I am trying to accomplish. My purpose in this effort is to provide people with a source of information about faith, leadership, and important life choices.
I have preached for the Church of Christ for over 30 years. I have been the preacher for the Bright Angel Church of Christ in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1999.
I hold a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in community counseling and the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). I am a National Certified Counselor (NCC). In addition to this training, I also hold graduate degrees from Harding University Graduate School of Religion (M.Th.) and Louisiana Tech University (M.B.A.).
Elders and Deacons
Over the years, I have helped churches organize with elders and deacons. For a period of about ten years, I put together the material in my book, Elders and Deacons (21st Century Christian, 2003), which is a book on church leadership. You can go here if you would like a copy. For more information on the content of this book, check out the information under the heading, Elders & Deacons, at the top of this page. Among the links under this heading, click on Table of Contents for an outline of the material in the book. The other topics listed under Elders and Deacons are portions of some of the chapter subheadings in the book. This will give you an idea of the content.
Faith and Addiction
Excerpts from my book, Faith and Addiction, are made available under the heading, Faith & Addiction, at top of this page. The title of these page headings are taken from the chapter sub-headings in my book. Click on the Table of Contents page for a complete listing of the book sub-headings. This will give you an idea of what the whole book is about. The book is available on Amazon.com, and you can go here if you would like to order a copy.
Addiction material not found in my book is found under the heading, Other Content , at the top of the page.
The purpose of this book and website is to give religious people an alternative to the Twelve Steps theory, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and the disease model of addiction treatment. Religious people who use biblical teaching as a guide for their lives are the primary focus of attention, but even those who have no religious faith can benefit from the issues covered on this website.
Over the years, I have tried to help many people with all kinds of addictions. Since moving to Las Vegas, my focus has been on helping those who have drug and gambling addictions. In addition to the experience gained in church ministry, I have also tried to minister to people in other settings, such as the local prison.
The argument of my book, Faith and Addiction, is that religion and faith work best in stopping addiction when it is accompanied by a cognitive and choice approach to addictive behaviors. Today, religious people tend to be either neglected or misdirected to deterministic approaches like the Twelve Steps theory and disease model of addiction treatment. It is hoped that this website and my book, Faith and Addiction, can offer an alternative that is both biblically based and more effective than what is currently presented to religious people.
The Faith and Addiction book and website are designed to be used as a resource for those who wish to explore the relationship of faith, spirituality, and addiction treatment. I plan to update the material in the book by postings on addiction as well as additions to the Other Content page heading.
Life Choices
I am currently writing a book titled, Life Choices. The book should be finished in 2009. For more information on what this book will be like, check out the information under the heading, Life Choices, at the top of this page.
